Case Study: The Street achieves reliable, scalable NAS and AWS migration with Buurst (SoftNAS)

A Buurst Case Study

Reliable NAS Allows The Street to Move Out of Own Data Center into AWS Virtual Private Cloud

The Street (TheStreet.com) moved its websites and applications from a private data center to AWS but ran into repeated outages after deploying a community clustered file system on EC2. The cluster experienced split‑brain failures, poor vendor support, and file‑level replication that couldn’t scale to millions of files, which caused Apache webservers and business services to go offline.

The Street replaced the failing stack with SoftNAS on EC2 (EBS in RAID‑10), migrated data via rsync, and enabled SnapReplicate block‑level replication to a secondary availability zone. The result is fast, reliable NFS storage with near‑real‑time disaster recovery, scheduled snapshots for recovery points, and stable operation of critical apps (Oracle, custom Java, video streaming, Drupal) in AWS.
