Simplify Operations and Improve Observability with a Lightweight Service Mesh

Paybase, a cloud-native payment platform serving modern businesses, needed a way to scale its Kubernetes-based microservices while maintaining the high performance, security, reliability, and compliance required in FinTech. As its architecture grew to around 100 microservices, the team struggled in particular with gRPC load balancing and wanted a service mesh that would help a small infrastructure team operate more efficiently.

Paybase evaluated service mesh options and ultimately implemented Buoyant’s Linkerd after finding Istio too complex to install, upgrade, and support. With Linkerd, Paybase said new services are automatically configured, management time has dropped, and operational headaches have been reduced without adding noticeable latency or resource overhead. The company also benefited from strong community support and documentation, making Buoyant’s solution a good fit for its lightweight, highly supported open source approach.
