Using ISO 50001 Certification to Improve Energy Efficiency, Reduce Costs and Boost Sustainability

Viridor, one of the UK’s leading recycling, renewable energy and waste management companies, needed to reduce rising energy consumption and costs while meeting regulatory requirements, customer expectations, and its social responsibility goals. To address this, the company worked with BSI and pursued ISO 50001 energy management certification.

BSI helped Viridor implement an energy management system that included smart meters, real-time monitoring, staff engagement, and tighter operational controls to identify waste and improve energy performance. As a result, Viridor improved energy efficiency, reduced carbon-related costs and allowances, strengthened its bid credentials, and enhanced its sustainability reputation, with a target of becoming 20% more energy efficient per pound of revenue by 2015/16 compared with 2010/11.
