Sheffield Hallam University - Customer Case Study

Sheffield Hallam University worked with BSI to strengthen its energy management approach and respond proactively to carbon-reduction pressures, while also aligning its operations with the sustainability topics taught across the university. The university needed a formal structure to better manage energy consumption, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and demonstrate that it was “practising what it preaches,” so it adopted BSI’s ISO 50001 energy management certification path.

BSI helped Sheffield Hallam University implement an ISO 50001 energy management system, supported by a gap analysis, internal audit training, and a more structured, strategic energy team. As a result, the university achieved an 11% reduction in annual carbon emissions from total energy use, saved more than £100,000 over a year, and delivered around £10,000 in monthly energy savings, even as its estate grew by 2%. BSI’s framework also helped improve reputation, earn recognition for best practice, and support continued behavioural and operational energy improvements.
