New International Standard Helps Goodwood Demonstrate Commitment to Sustainable Event Management

Goodwood, the event operations team behind major events such as Festival of Speed, Glorious Goodwood and Goodwood Revival, wanted to protect its reputation for excellence while proving it was a pioneer in sustainable event management. Working with BSI, it sought a structured way to embed sustainability across the organisation and show suppliers that its events were being managed responsibly, particularly for motor events. The service used was BSI’s ISO 20121 Event Sustainability Management System certification.

BSI helped Goodwood implement ISO 20121, introducing formal sustainability processes, stronger stakeholder engagement and clearer focus on waste, utilities and procurement. The results included a 40% increase in public transport use, a 50% reduction in paper consumption, and better identification of business trends for preventative action and improvement. At the 2012 Festival of Speed, Goodwood also improved waste handling by recycling 30 tonnes of wood and six tonnes of glass, while its waste partner recycled a further 60% of the waste produced.
