Morrisons cuts eggs’ carbon footprint by 60% with BSI

Morrisons, a leading UK supermarket, sought to independently certify the carbon neutral status of its 'Better for our Planet' eggs to help customers make sustainable choices and support its net-zero goals. The challenge was to move beyond an internal calculation and obtain a consumer-recognized certification that provided assurance of the product's carbon neutrality. Morrisons partnered with the vendor BSI to achieve this through the BSI Kitemark for carbon neutral products.

BSI conducted a rigorous evaluation against international standards, including PAS 2060. The solution involved operational changes such as powering hen houses with renewable energy, altering the hens' diet, and developing carbon-capturing landscapes. As a result, BSI helped Morrisons achieve a 60% reduction in the carbon footprint of its eggs, certifying them as carbon neutral and making Morrisons the first UK company to earn the BSI Kitemark for a product.
