Preview of the Costain Group Case Study

Integrating Management Systems to Improve Business Performance and Achieve Sustained Competitive Advantage

Costain Group, a long-established British engineering and construction company, needed to improve quality and efficiency, strengthen environmental and health and safety performance, enhance collaboration, secure information, and increase business resilience. BSI supported Costain’s standards journey across multiple management systems, including ISO 9001, ISO 14001, BS OHSAS 18001, BS 11000, ISO/IEC 27001, and ISO 22301.

With BSI’s help, Costain integrated these standards into its broader business strategy and used them to build more robust, systematic management processes. The results included 84% average customer satisfaction and 90% repeat orders, a 53% reduction in waste, 93% of waste diverted from landfill, 46% lower carbon emissions, a 47% reduction in accident frequency rate to 0.09, a 72% drop in security incidents since 2010, and stronger joint ventures and business continuity capabilities.
