A BSI Case Study

Preview of the Large Health System Case Study

In-depth Incident Analysis Key to Major Reduction in Slips, Trips and Falls

BSI worked with a large health system operating 12 acute care hospitals and employing more than 26,000 staff. The customer was facing a rising injury rate from slips, trips, and falls, which was driving lost work time and higher injury-related costs. BSI’s EHS services were brought in to help identify the root causes and determine corrective actions.

BSI analyzed incident reports, mapped hot, medium, and cold zones across facilities, and performed root cause analysis to pinpoint the main issues: wet areas and trip hazards in patient rooms and clinics. Based on these findings, BSI helped implement controls such as slip-resistant footwear guidance, mats, spill response procedures, upgraded drinking fountains, umbrella bags, communication campaigns, and other safety improvements. The result was a 44% drop in the average yearly number of slips, trips, and falls, a 33% reduction in the six months after rollout, and a 47% lower rate in the year following implementation versus the prior three-year average.
