A BSI Case Study
The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) worked with BSI to address the lack of clear guidance for smart city development in the UK. As cities faced growing pressure on transport, housing, climate, employment, and social care, fragmented local approaches were slowing progress and making it difficult to establish consistent smart city strategies.
BSI led the development of a fast-track PAS 181 Smart City Framework, bringing together stakeholders from government, industry, academia, and city councils to create a consensus-based best-practice guide. The result was a clear framework for city leaders that later became ISO 37106 in 2018, helping establish UK global leadership in smart city standards and enabling a growing series of Smart City PASs adopted internationally.
