How BSI Created a Growing Series of Manufacturing PASs Creating Solutions to Help Manufacturers Adopt Digital Technologies

High Value Manufacturing Catapult (HVMC) turned to BSI to help address a major challenge in UK manufacturing: slow adoption of digital technologies that was risking competitiveness, productivity, and supply chain resilience. HVMC wanted to understand how standards could remove barriers to innovation and support manufacturers in adopting digital manufacturing more quickly.

BSI responded by working with HVMC and the Institute for Manufacturing to identify priority areas for standards development and to create a standards adoption roadmap. This led to four PAS publications, including PAS 1040, PAS 7040, PAS 280, and PAS 1085, each developed in 9–12 months to establish best practice in areas such as digital readiness, data trustworthiness, through-life engineering services, and cybersecurity. The result was a faster route to adoption of digital technologies, with benefits including improved security and trust, more resilient supply chains, and stronger UK leadership in manufacturing innovation.
