How BSI Certification to ISO 50001 Has Helped Aggregate Industries Manage Energy Consumption, Reduce Carbon Emissions and Control Costs

Aggregate Industries, a UK construction materials supplier with more than 200 sites, wanted to reduce energy use and carbon emissions while meeting increasingly demanding efficiency targets. As part of its sustainability strategy, the company needed a better way to manage operational energy intensity and greenhouse gas intensity across its business, beyond basic statutory compliance. BSI helped through certification to ISO 50001, supporting Aggregate Industries’ energy management efforts.

With BSI certification to ISO 50001, Aggregate Industries extended its energy management system across the business and received valuable feedback to improve compliance with the standard. The result was stronger control of energy use, costs, and carbon emissions per tonne, while reinforcing its green credentials and helping it compete for new business. The company is targeting annual 5% improvements in both operational energy intensity and greenhouse gas intensity, contributing to an 18.5% total improvement in each.
