Case Study: Thorn Lighting achieves energy efficiency gains with BSI certification

A BSI Case Study

Preview of the Thorn Lighting Case Study

How BSI Certification to ISO 50001 Enables Thorn Lighting to Demonstrate Outstanding Energy Efficiency

Thorn Lighting, a manufacturing company and part of the Zumtobel Group, wanted to make its Spennymoor plant “best in class” for energy efficiency while reducing energy use, waste, carbon emissions, and rising utility costs. To meet this challenge, it worked with BSI and energy management specialist TEST Consulting to build a more structured energy management approach and pursue ISO 50001 certification.

BSI supported Thorn Lighting’s certification to ISO 50001:2018, helping the company implement a continual energy reduction framework with real-time monitoring, better visibility of significant energy users, and stronger energy-focused behaviors across the site. The results were impressive: energy use fell by 21%, CO2 emissions were significantly reduced, and Thorn saved £150,000 in energy costs, £20,000 in CRC payments, and £10,000 by avoiding ESOS reporting, while also gaining a competitive edge through BSI certification.
