Hospital Injury Prevention Program Quickly Reduces Incident Rates and Workers’ Comp Costs

BSI worked with a leading US Medical Center that was seeing employee injury rates well above the national average. As the hospital planned to expand from one facility to multiple hospitals and clinics over the next 3–5 years, it needed to rapidly improve its injury prevention program. BSI provided EHS/injury prevention consulting support, including a gap assessment of the existing program.

BSI developed a five-year strategic plan and implemented nearly 30 tactics to reduce hazards in high-risk departments such as EVS, Engineering, Perioperative Services, ICU, and Labor and Delivery. The work led to major measurable gains, including $4.5 million in workers’ compensation savings from a $2.07 million investment in year one, a 46% decrease in average cost per claim within six months, and an 86% reduction in lost work days from Q1 2015 to Q1 2016.
