Edinburgh Napier University Delivers Scalability and Security by Embracing the Cloud

Edinburgh Napier University, a multi-campus public university in Scotland with 19,000 students, needed a modern way to protect a diverse mix of staff, students, visitors, and personal devices across wired, wireless, and remote access. BSI helped the university replace an end-of-life on-premises web filtering appliance with a cloud-based secure web gateway to meet GDPR needs, improve scalability, and provide better web filtering, malware protection, reporting, and mobile device support.

BSI implemented Zscaler’s Secure Web Gateway solution, integrating it with Microsoft Active Directory and AirWatch MDM while providing URL filtering, SSL inspection, advanced threat protection, and detailed logging. The rollout was completed successfully across the university network and roaming Windows, MacOS, iOS, and Android devices, with 97% of internet transactions experiencing less than 10 milliseconds of proxy latency and nearly 300 million transactions handled in 90 days.
