City of London, the local government and policing authority for the Square Mile, wanted to reduce carbon emissions by 15% by 2015 while securing senior management commitment and embedding sustainable energy practices across its operations. BSI supported the organization in aligning its existing energy management approach with ISO 50001 Energy Management Systems requirements, using the standard as a benchmark for best practice.

BSI helped City of London pilot ISO 50001 at its flagship Guildhall complex and begin extending it through departmental action plans across additional sites. The result was a more structured, credible energy management system that improved accountability at senior levels, raised the profile of energy efficiency internally, and positioned the City to pursue tangible carbon and cost savings, with the target of a 15% energy-use reduction by 2015.
