A BSI Case Study
Innovate UK, the UK’s innovation agency, needed evidence that there was real market demand for a responsible innovation framework before developing a Publicly Available Specification (PAS). It commissioned BSI to research what “responsible” means across different industries and determine what a useful framework would need to cover.
BSI carried out depth interviews with 48 leading innovators across AI and big data, life sciences, robotics, social media, and advanced materials, helping build industry consensus around the scope of the PAS. The research showed strong support for a framework, leading Innovate UK to create PAS 440 with BSI; the PAS can be developed in around 9–12 months and was shaped further by stakeholder input, including potential PAS Steering Group members.
