BS 10008 Certification Enables the Trust to Reduce Operational Costs and Legally Destroy Paper-based Records

Royal Devon & Exeter Health Trust worked with BSI to tackle a growing paper-records problem while supporting the NHS goal of becoming paperless. As a large regional health trust serving around 400,000 people, it was running out of storage space for paper patient files and needed a way to digitize records while protecting their legal authenticity. The service used was BSI’s BS 10008 certification for the evidential weight and legal admissibility of electronic information.

BSI supported the Trust through planning, documentation, and assessment of its scanning and storage processes, helping it implement historical and ongoing scanning bureaus and maintain compliance. With BS 10008 certification, the Trust can legally destroy paper records, cut storage and transport costs, and eventually sell its paper-record storage site. BSI also identified further savings, including the potential to reduce scanning checks from 100% to 80%, saving the equivalent of one full-time employee now and up to six as digitization expands.
