Sainsbury’s leverages test automation to double release frequency

Sainsbury’s, the UK supermarket chain, needed to increase its Groceries Online release cadence from once a month to once every two weeks without sacrificing front-end quality or browser/device coverage. Manual regression testing was too slow and resource-dependent, and the team was looking for a way to scale testing across multiple browser-device combinations using BrowserStack.

Using BrowserStack’s cloud testing platform with Cypress, plus BrowserStack Live for one-off debugging and cross-browser testing, Sainsbury’s was able to parallelize tests and streamline regression. The result was a major productivity boost: testing time dropped from 30–45 minutes to about 10 minutes per browser, end-to-end backend release testing fell from 5–10 days to about one day, and release frequency increased by 2x.
