Case Study: University of Victoria achieves 100 Gbps loss-free research connectivity and minutes-long multi-terabyte transfers with Brocade

A Brocade Case Study

The Fast Path to International Research Collaboration

The University of Victoria, a research-intensive university in British Columbia, needed to support data-heavy collaborations across international research networks: particle physics, astronomy, ocean sciences and other labs were saturating a shared 10 Gbps link, making multi‑terabyte transfers take hours or days and limiting the university’s ability to participate in time-sensitive global projects and adopt SDN orchestration.

UVic upgraded to a 100 Gbps backbone using the Brocade MLX Series core router with OpenFlow support and acquired it via Brocade Network Subscription. The deployment delivered a loss‑free 100 Gbps path between research sites, cut multi‑terabyte transfer times from days to minutes, enabled an SDN‑ready infrastructure for future flexibility, was completed ahead of schedule, and strengthened UVic’s competitiveness for grants and collaborations.
