A Brocade Case Study
SUNY Upstate University Health System, the academic medical center serving central New York, needed to deploy Epic as a server‑based, Citrix‑published EHR across hospitals and clinics while meeting New York State green‑IT virtualization goals. With more than 30 Citrix servers and 2,700–3,500 concurrent Epic users at peak, the IT team required a reliable, virtual load‑balancing solution to handle traffic, enable updates without downtime, and support a phased rollout.
They selected the Brocade Virtual Traffic Manager virtual appliance for its lower cost, prior positive use in Radiology, and seamless fit with their VMware environment. The appliance was live in under a week, now load‑balances about 15 Epic and other applications, provides automatic failover and proactive alerts, and has delivered continuous availability since go‑live—streamlining deployment, improving troubleshooting, and scaling to support additional services.
