City of Chattanooga Future Proofs Its Campus Network while Maximizing Taxpayer Dollars

The City of Chattanooga needed to modernize a campus network that serves more than 100 locations, 2,000 city employees and 171,000 residents. An aging infrastructure could not support the planned VoIP rollout or required features like QoS and PoE, and critical applications — including GIS and real-time monitoring — suffered poor performance (backups took more than a day). The city’s challenge was to upgrade the network to support VoIP and growing application demands while maximizing taxpayer dollars.

Chattanooga deployed Brocade FastIron SX core switches and Brocade ICX access/aggregation switches (ICX 6650, 6610 and 6450) with mixed stacking to simplify management and extend advanced features. The upgrade enabled VoIP, improved application performance (backups now take minutes), supported new mobile and emergency workflows, future-proofed capacity for wireless and automation, and delivered significant cost and operational savings for IT staff.
