Case Study: MLB achieves massive scalability — supporting millions of subscribers and handling a 57% demand spike — with Broadleaf Commerce

A Broadleaf Commerce Case Study

Preview of the MLB Case Study

Mlb Hits a Home Run With Broadleaf

MLB, the 30‑club Major League Baseball organization, needed a commerce and entitlement platform that could scale for millions of fans across MLB.tv, the MLB App, club sites and ballpark services while handling thousands of concurrent back‑office agents, hundreds of thousands of daily subscriptions and tens of thousands of entitlements per minute. To meet that challenge, MLB partnered with Broadleaf Commerce and adopted Broadleaf’s microservice‑based Subscription and Entitlement services and Headless Commerce solution.

Broadleaf Commerce implemented cloud‑hosted microservices (subscriptions, entitlements, PIM, cart/checkout and custom APIs) on Google Cloud to isolate workloads and scale on demand. The result: record single‑day subscription renewals during opening week, Broadleaf handled a 57% demand spike year‑over‑year, peaked at ~56,000 entitlements/requests per minute with servers at only ~25% load, and today supports millions of subscribers and thousands of concurrent agents across MLB platforms.
