Sydney Trains Visualising rail assets for optimised asset management

Sydney Trains, the operator of Sydney’s suburban rail network with 170 stations across eight lines and over 505 miles of track, needed advanced decision analytics as part of a transition to a new corporate EAM system. The challenge was to select and prioritise annual work programs using a multi-variant, model-based analysis that balanced asset condition, criticality, risk, time and cost of maintenance, available resources, and access for interventions.

Brightly applied a “Diagnose–Construct–Calibrate–Outputs” approach: collating data, running model-development workshops, specifying remaining data requirements, calibrating with stakeholders, and delivering visual outputs via Esri online story maps. The solution enabled display of multiple future asset scenarios on spatial layers, strengthened senior stakeholder engagement, and fed directly into Sydney Trains’ Strategic Asset Management Plan, Asset Maintenance Plans and Annual Work Program.
