Longwood Streamlines Building Services Department with SmartGov

The City of Longwood, Florida, a growing Orlando suburb of about 16,451 residents, needed an easy, scalable way to manage a rising volume of building permits, inspections, planning, zoning and code enforcement with an eight-person building department. The city was relying on a finance-focused platform that forced staff to download, convert and e-mail plans for review, preventing simultaneous reviews and creating workflow bottlenecks.

After a yearlong evaluation, Longwood implemented Brightly’s SmartGov (launched citywide on August 31, 2021) to centralize permitting and reviews online. SmartGov enabled concurrent plan reviews across departments, automated notifications and a resident-facing portal for remote permit applications, producing faster approvals, fewer calls and emails, measurable productivity gains (equivalent to roughly “half a person”) and the ability to accomplish more with fewer staff.
