Henderson County, NC Wins Energy Award for Conservation Efforts

Henderson County, North Carolina (pop. 107,927) faced rising energy costs and a County Manager mandate to cut energy use by 10%. Environmental Programs Coordinator Megan Piner led the county’s effort to meet that target through a formal Resource Conservation Plan.

The county targeted facility improvements, vehicle and equipment changes, and behavior modification while using FacilityDude utility-tracking software to set baselines and monitor progress. Upgrades such as efficient bulbs, LED exit signs, preventive maintenance, fleet reductions and a solar thermal system at the detention center cut natural gas use there by about 56%; better data also revealed billing errors, helped build stakeholder buy-in, and contributed to an energy leadership award.
