From road repair to smart lighting, the City of Edinburgh Council is driving cost savings

The City of Edinburgh Council’s Place Management team, responsible for roads, lighting, parks and other public assets across a capital city of more than 500,000 people, faced a growing repair backlog and difficulty assembling reports because asset data lived in many siloed systems. With pressure to cut £41 million from its budget and nearly 29,000 annual complaints about aging street lighting, the council needed a single, more efficient way to manage and prioritise maintenance and customer enquiries.

The council expanded its Brightly Confirm cloud solution to consolidate street lighting, bridges, properties and other asset types, integrated it with CRM and deployed mobile and work-allocation modules for 250+ users. The integrated smart-lighting system now self-reports faults into Confirm, speeding repairs and enabling remote diagnostics; recently added asset categories saw a 90% reduction in backlog and 95% of repairs meeting or exceeding targets, resident complaints fell and missed-collection complaints dropped more than 30%. The SaaS model also reduced IT overhead, delivered six-figure operational savings from fewer site visits, and supports an estimated ~£54 million energy saving from LED lighting over 25 years.
