Nielsen, the global market-intelligence firm known for the Nielsen Ratings with operations in 100 countries and 36,000 employees, faced a growing internal innovation program but lacked a clear definition of "innovation" and a way to triage, prioritize and roadmap ideas. Relying on SharePoint left idea management fragmented and invisible to senior leadership, and the company needed a more accessible, measurable way to increase employee participation and surface the best, business-focused ideas.
Nielsen implemented Brightidea’s flexible, intuitive platform and now runs 10–15 topic-driven “Challenges” year-round using WebStorm, supported by a dedicated innovation team. The system enabled frontline visibility and manager accountability, producing 500 highly qualified submissions per quarter (1,000+ ideas overall), driving ideas into incubation and proof-of-concept, and delivering millions of documented hours saved (about 4 million hours in 2013), while improving prioritization and senior-management access to innovation metrics.
