How BT is Turning Creative Ideas into Concrete Projects with Measurable Returns

BT Group, a global communications provider operating in 170 countries with over 100,000 employees, needed a better way to harness employee creativity and customer insights after an earlier innovation program failed to deliver expected ROI. The challenge was to create a scalable system that would capture ideas across the business and reliably convert the best ones into concrete projects with measurable financial and customer-impact returns.

BT launched the New Ideas Scheme with a three-person team and selected Brightidea’s WebStorm platform to manage ideas from submission to implementation, pairing it with a Rewards Shop that awards up to 10% of first-year benefits (max £30,000) to top contributors. Since October 2005 the program has collected 10,000+ ideas, produced over £250 million in cost savings and new revenue, delivered an estimated return of more than $75 for every $1 invested, and driven meaningful improvements in customer loyalty and retention.
