BT Group, a global telecommunications and IT services provider with over 100,000 employees operating in 170 countries, faced the challenge of creating and sustaining a culture of innovation across complex, siloed structures. After previously outsourcing its innovation program, BT decided in 2005 to in‑source a new initiative that could capture employee and customer insights, encourage participation with clear incentives, and convert promising ideas into measurable business outcomes.

BT launched the New Ideas Scheme led by an internal team using Brightidea’s WebStorm platform and a culturally aware Rewards Shop, backed by CEO support and a network of innovation champions, evaluators and implementers. The program collected more than 10,000 ideas and delivered over £100M in cost savings and new revenue, paid out significant rewards (up to £30,000), boosted customer loyalty and transformed the company’s innovation culture.
