Epicor Software discovered in June 2013 that Google had deindexed their site, causing organic traffic from Google to drop by over 90% and severely threatening a key source of revenue. The sudden loss prompted a rapid investigation to determine the cause and recover their search presence.
Dawna Olsen used BrightEdge dashboards and backlink data to pinpoint the drop, identify excessive affiliate links and problematic footer links that resembled link farms, disavowed unwanted links, and had affiliates remove or diversify links; one month later she submitted a reconsideration and the penalty was lifted. Post-recovery metrics showed organic traffic up 23%, a 3X increase in share of voice, critical keywords moving from unranked to #8, and top regional keywords improving from 43 to 3, restoring substantial lost traffic and revenue.
