Math Tutor DVD Grows Video Revenue 50 Percent by Streaming on Brightcove

Math Tutor DVD, founded by Jason Gibson in 2004, evolved from selling CDs and DVDs to building a membership-based, on-demand video service. As customer viewing shifted online and to mobile, Gibson needed a video platform that could deliver paywalled, high-quality streaming across devices and drive social distribution to convert viewers into paying members.

By adopting Brightcove (including Brightcove Gallery and Brightcove Social) and launching a Brightcove-streamed mobile app, Math Tutor DVD offered sampler lessons, streamlined cross-posting, and subscription/pay-per-view options. The changes drove a 50% increase in video-driven revenue (the members’ area now accounts for roughly half of total revenue), a 20% year-over-year rise in subscriptions (85% of that in four months), and about 4,000 app downloads in just over a month.
