How Uktv Used On-demand Video To Grow Their Audience And Their Revenues

UKTV, the joint BBC Worldwide and Scripps-owned broadcaster behind channels such as Dave, Drama and Gold, set out to evolve from a traditional TV network into a multi-channel VOD business with its UKTV Play brand. The challenge was to build awareness of UKTV Play, deliver a TV-like ad experience without subscriptions, and scale across devices—while a small in-house team managed design and product development.

UKTV partnered with Brightcove for player and delivery services (including Freewheel ad integration, server-side ad insertion, DRM and cloud encoding) and focused development on strategic platforms like iOS, Android, YouView, Freeview Play and Amazon Fire TV. The result: streamlined operations for the 12‑person team, stronger ad revenues and audience growth—26% year-over-year increase in views, rising app downloads and brand awareness above targets, and continued profit growth.
