Brightcove Helps SFMOMA Bring Depth and Context to Modern Art

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), a leading nonprofit devoted to modern and contemporary art, had relied on online video since the late 1990s but faced a growing challenge: its Flash-based player prevented many mobile and tablet visitors from accessing rich video content. With limited internal resources and a need for a seamless transition that wouldn’t disrupt frequent visitors, the museum sought a quick, cross-platform solution to preserve and expand its digital storytelling.

In 2011 SFMOMA implemented Brightcove Video Cloud, gaining automated encoding, embedding and uploading, playlist support, and reliable cross-platform playback (including iOS). The platform removed third‑party bottlenecks for live streaming, simplified distribution to YouTube and social channels, and drove a 20% increase in daily video views, earning positive feedback from visitors and staff while supporting the museum’s growing video strategy during its building expansion.
