Gateshead NHS migrates over one million studies & goes live with new PACS & VNA

Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust faced the challenge of migrating over one million legacy radiology studies (15TB of data) to a vendor-neutral environment upon the end of its existing PACS contract. To ensure data retention and availability for a new PACS, the Trust needed to convert this localized data into a standards-based format for its new electronic patient record strategy. They partnered with BridgeHead Software, utilizing its HealthStore Vendor Neutral Archive (VNA) to achieve this.

BridgeHead Software implemented a two-phased solution. First, they migrated all legacy and national data into their HealthStore VNA, ensuring it conformed to DICOM standards. They then integrated the VNA with the new Carestream Vue PACS, enabling seamless archiving and retrieval of studies. The project was completed with minimal disruption to clinical users, ensuring no impact on patient care. The successful migration has provided a cornerstone for the Trust's enterprise-wide electronic patient record, with plans to expand the VNA to archive data from other clinical departments.
