Museum leads the way in documentation of mining history

Deutsches Bergbau-Museum in Bochum, the Leibniz Research Museum for Geo-resources, documents and researches ancient mines—most notably the Palaeolithic ochre mine on Thasos. The museum needed a way to capture delicate underground sites using 2D and 3D spatial data (2D line‑scanners and thousands of photos) but was hampered by antiquated, proprietary CAD software with poor interoperability and restrictive fees, so it selected Bricsys and its BricsCAD product.

Bricsys supplied BricsCAD as a DWG‑based, open alternative that preserved compatibility with legacy files, removed licence barriers and streamlined the creation of reliable digital replicas and plans. As a result, the Deutsches Bergbau-Museum can continue documenting Thasos and other mines without losing prior work, improve virtual modelling workflows for research and restoration, and keep all existing documentation usable with no restriction—enabling ongoing field projects across multiple ancient sites.
