How Dubsmash Uses Content Sharing to Boost User Engagement and Retention

Dubsmash, a popular app for creating short dubbed videos with high app-store ratings and millions of users, added a “Groups” feature to let people share videos with closed communities. The challenge was to harness social sharing and friend recommendations for group invitations while providing a smooth, personalized onboarding and gaining instrumentation to measure which users drove engagement.

Using Branch deep links, Dubsmash implemented a customized welcome flow: invite links take recipients to the app store to install (if needed) and then open directly to the specific group page showing the group name, members, and posts. This both enabled tracking of group leaders and substantially improved engagement and retention—50% more shared links clicked, plus retention lifts of 16% at one day, 24% at one week, and 50% at one month.
