Boxed is an online retailer that sells grocery and household items in bulk and faced the common dilemma of whether to invest in native apps despite higher development and acquisition costs. The company needed to overcome the install/onboarding barrier and find a way to turn low-cost mobile web and email traffic into high-value app users to justify its long-term app-first strategy.
Boxed implemented Branch’s deep linking and attribution platform—using sticky web-to-app banners, deferred deep links, and Universal Email with Sailthru—to route users seamlessly from web and email into specific in-app pages. The result: in-app conversion rates rose ~90%, mobile revenue increased 54%, 30-day retention more than doubled (to 104%), and re-engagement/purchase conversions improved dramatically (133% higher on re-engagement campaigns), proving the app-driven approach delivered substantially higher LTV.
