VDAB, the public employment service of Flanders, faced the challenge of managing a rapidly growing database of over 11,000 competencies. Manually identifying and grouping similar or duplicate skills had become impossible, creating inefficiency. To solve this, they partnered with vendor Brainjar to develop an AI-based semantic matching solution.

Brainjar’s solution involved translating competencies into a common language and then processing them using the fastText word embedding model and custom sentence embedding techniques. Their application provided a user interface that established a feedback loop, allowing VDAB to refine the algorithms continuously. This enabled VDAB to clean up its database with significant time savings and greatly improved the efficiency of its skills search queries.
