Norske Skog Golbey, one of France's largest newsprint producers, faced a persistent challenge with frequent sheet breaks that halted production multiple times daily, creating waste and costly downtime. Despite years of effort and equipment upgrades, the problem kept returning under changing conditions. The company partnered with vendor Braincube to implement its Real-Time Process Optimization service to understand how thousands of sensor measurements interacted and to find a sustainable solution.

Braincube's solution enabled Norske Skog Golbey to run its process in alignment with current conditions instead of reactively correcting it. This approach identified key factors influencing break frequency, such as pulp management, which challenged long-standing assumptions. The results were immediate, with daily sheet breaks reduced from 7 to 0.5. This new stability unlocked a 12% increase in production speed, reduced chemical and energy use, and scaled to $54M in annual gains, saving $4M within the first few months.
