The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer - Customer Case Study

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, led by Director of Digital Experience Jeff Frey, faced the challenge of consolidating and democratizing vast amounts of clinical and research information to improve internal and external collaboration. Strict healthcare regulations, legacy on‑premise systems, and roughly 25 distinct audiences—from patients to researchers and donors—made it difficult to deliver a seamless, secure experience or to coordinate complex processes like international patient billing, which had relied on email and fax.

MD Anderson adopted Box as its first major cloud initiative, using secure shared folders for embassy coordination, routing bills into appropriate folders, and integrating Box with SharePoint to break down silos and streamline workflows. These changes improved transparency and tracking for accounts receivable, enabled broader collaboration between clinicians and researchers, and supported a growing user base—over 6,500 active users since May 2013—advancing the center’s goal of accelerating cancer research and care.
