Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company - Customer Case Study

Nationwide Insurance, a 92‑year‑old company with roughly 24,000 employees and many external partners, faced the dual challenge of modernizing endpoint and collaboration tools for a diverse workforce while protecting sensitive customer data. Robert Burkhart, Technology Planner for New Technology Innovation, needed to enable flexible device use and secure content sharing across claims and other customer‑facing workflows in a traditionally risk‑averse environment.

Burkhart implemented a flexible mobile device program (company devices, BYOD stipends and loaner libraries), layered in Box and other cloud solutions with governance, SSO/identity controls and change management, and built case portals to aggregate claims content. The result: faster, simpler access to case files, higher employee productivity and adoption, reduced shadow‑IT risk and stronger security—an approach that earned him Box’s “Innovator of the Month” recognition.
