Woodside Energy Integrates Spot for Enhanced Safety at LNG Facility

Woodside Energy, Australia's largest listed natural gas producer, faced the challenge of conducting routine safety inspections at its remote and complex Pluto LNG facility while minimizing the exposure of its human operators to potential hazards. To address this, the company partnered with Boston Dynamics to deploy the agile mobile robot Spot, nicknamed "Spector," for these risky data capture tasks.

The solution implemented by Boston Dynamics involved Spot autonomously navigating the facility with specialized payloads, including thermal and zoom cameras, to inspect equipment and transmit data directly into Woodside's digital twin system. This integration allows operators to remotely identify issues and run analytics. The results included a significant reduction in inspection time and enhanced safety, as crews can now review data before entering the field, bringing the correct tools to fix issues immediately. Boston Dynamics' technology has given Woodside greater operational awareness and efficiency.
