Spot Makes Austria’s Largest Power Plant Safer

Wien Energie, the operator of Austria's largest power plant, faced the challenge of modernizing manual inspections within its vast Simmering facility. The utility needed a way to automate the reading of analog displays, monitor equipment conditions, and detect hazardous gas leaks to improve safety and efficiency, but found that stationary cameras and drones were either too costly or impractical for the complex indoor environment with stairs and obstacles.

Boston Dynamics provided its agile quadruped robot, Spot, equipped with a suite of sensors including a 360-degree camera, thermal imager, and gas detectors. The robot autonomously performs inspection routes, capturing data that is analyzed by AI software to detect faults and trigger alarms. The solution from Boston Dynamics successfully identified issues like a critical 500-degree steam leak during its pilot phase, enhancing plant safety, providing valuable data for predictive maintenance, and allowing human staff to focus on more complex tasks.
