Case Study: RATP Group improves hazardous metro inspections with Boston Dynamics Spot

A Boston Dynamics Case Study

Preview of the RATP Group Case Study

Spot carries out inspections in hard-to-reach and hazardous areas of the RATP metro infrastructure.

The RATP Group, a French state-owned public transport operator for Greater Paris, faced the challenge of inspecting thousands of difficult-to-access and hazardous areas within its vast, century-old metro network. To protect employees from risk and prevent infrastructure failure, the company sought a new solution and turned to Boston Dynamics, deploying their Spot robot to perform these inspections.

Boston Dynamics' solution involved equipping Spot, named Perceval by RATP, with a 360-degree camera with an infrared sensor and specialized radio equipment. This allowed the robot to be teleoperated to capture crucial visual and thermal data in dark, confined tunnels. As a result, RATP can now safely inspect its most dangerous infrastructure, with plans for Spot to autonomously survey 13km of confined tunnels and create digital twins of hard-to-reach areas.
