The customer, Meta's Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) team, sought to advance the field of artificial intelligence by tackling the challenge of getting robots to follow high-level instructions, solve problems, and autonomously navigate unseen physical environments without a map. To achieve this, they used Boston Dynamics' Spot robot as a research platform.

Boston Dynamics provided the robust Spot platform, which Meta researchers used to train and test new AI models. This solution enabled two major breakthroughs: the development of an artificial visual cortex (VC-1) and a new approach called adaptive skill coordination (ASC). Using ASC, Boston Dynamics' Spot achieved a near-perfect 98% success rate in locating and retrieving objects in unfamiliar spaces, a significant improvement over traditional methods.
