GlobalFoundries, a global semiconductor manufacturer, faced the challenge of monitoring thousands of equipment inspection points in its vast Vermont facility. It was not economical to install fixed sensors on every asset for condition monitoring and predictive maintenance. To address this, the company turned to vendor Boston Dynamics and its Spot robot to implement a more practical, mobile data collection solution.

Boston Dynamics, working with its partner Levatas, implemented an automated inspection solution using the Spot robot. Spot was equipped with cognitive intelligence to identify and read analog gauges and monitor thermal conditions on critical equipment. This allowed GlobalFoundries to collect valuable operational data without costly facility upgrades. The solution enables better-informed maintenance decisions, helps predict equipment failures to prevent downtime, and supports the goal of maintaining a steady product supply for customers amidst a global semiconductor shortage.
