Energy Savings & Predictive Maintenance at AB InBev’s Largest European Brewery

Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev) faced the challenge of performing predictive maintenance and reducing energy waste at its massive Leuven brewery. The scale of the facility and the 24/7 operation of its packaging lines made it difficult to identify mechanical issues and compressed air leaks before they caused costly unplanned downtime. To support its "Brewery of the Future" program and goal of net-zero operations, AB InBev partnered with Boston Dynamics to implement an automated inspection solution.

Boston Dynamics provided its Spot robot, equipped with thermal and acoustic sensors, to autonomously conduct regular inspections. Spot identified overheating equipment and pinpointed air and gas leaks with high accuracy, even in noisy environments. This solution enabled AB InBev to shift its technicians from manual inspections to focused repairs. In the first six months, Spot discovered 150 anomalies and slashed the average repair time from months to just 13 days, leading to significant energy savings and a return on investment for Boston Dynamics' Spot within one year.
