Case Study: BP improves offshore safety and efficiency with Boston Dynamics Spot

A Boston Dynamics Case Study

Preview of the BP Case Study

About the practical steps the innovation and engineering team has taken to deploy Spot offshore

The customer, BP, a major global energy company, sought to improve employee safety and operational efficiency at its remote and hazardous facilities as part of its net-zero ambition. The challenge was to minimize personnel exposure to dangerous environments and to gather more comprehensive operational data. This led them to work with the vendor, Boston Dynamics, deploying its Spot robot to serve as a mobile sensor platform for inspections.

Boston Dynamics provided the Spot robot, which was rigorously tested first on a simulated site and then at a BP refinery to ensure reliability. The solution involved equipping Spot with specialized sensors to perform tasks like leak detection and equipment monitoring. As a result, BP improved safety by removing employees from high-risk areas and increased data collection efficiency. The successful trials gave the company the confidence to deploy Spot on a live offshore rig for an extended operational period.
