Sankara Eye Foundation (SEF) is a volunteer-driven nonprofit working to eradicate curable blindness in India—where about 25 million people are blind—operating with only one full-time and two part-time staff. In 2014 SEF participated in #GivingTuesday for the first time to amplify a year-long matching gift challenge and broaden donor engagement despite limited staff capacity.
Their campaign framed donations as “less than the cost of a movie and popcorn” to give the gift of sight and used targeted tactics—a Thanksgiving-week email, heavy social outreach (including the CEO’s and development director’s channels), advocacy portals, radio ads, and hourly leaderboard updates—to drive urgency and visibility. The effort raised $25,130 from 118 donors and earned a 2014 Network for Good honorable mention for Most Time on Leaderboards.
