A Bonterra Apricot Case Study
The Center for Violence-Free Relationships, a nonprofit serving western El Dorado County, faced a critical challenge: multiple generations of families continued to experience domestic violence, but the organization had no way to measure whether its services were actually breaking that cycle. With a broad mission, anecdotal success and service counts weren’t enough to prove impact or guide change, and leadership had to decide what to stop as well as start.
Under courageous executive and board leadership the Center narrowed its mission to end intergenerational transmission of violence, refocused services on parents of 0–12 and affected children, hired licensed clinicians, and adopted ETO (Efforts to Outcomes) software to track outcomes through the Second Generation Project. The data-driven approach produced measurable results—a 35% reduction in children’s PTSD symptoms and a 51% drop in interpersonal distress for program completers—energized staff, unlocked $80,000 in new funding soon after rollout, and helped grow the agency’s budget by about 50%.
